Maltese as a Foreign Language – MQF Level 1

We are pleased to announce the launch of our online Maltese as a Foreign Language summer courses, tailored specifically for Maltese living abroad with limited or no prior knowledge of the language. These courses present a valuable opportunity to deepen your understanding of the Maltese language and enhance your ability to engage with it effectively.

Applicants are being offered a choice of two online interactive course:

Morning course:

Time: Tues & Fri 0700-1000hrs CET

Duration: 3 June to 12 September 2025

Venue: Online (MS Teams)

Evening course:

Time: Mon & Tues 1600-1900hrs CET

Duration: 2 June to 9 September 2025

Venue: Online (Ms Teams)

Knowledge

Learners will:

  • Understand the basics of Maltese grammar and sentence structure.
  • Acquire elementary vocabulary and commonly used expressions.
  • Recognise basic cultural references related to Maltese society.
  • Read and understand simple texts such as instructions, directions, and signs.
  • Understand the gist of slow, clear spoken Maltese (e.g. in news items or short dialogues).

Skills

Learners will be able to:

  • Read short, simple texts and sentences in Maltese.
  • Follow and participate in basic conversations on familiar topics.
  • Write short pieces of personal information (e.g. forms, postcards).
  • Construct simple grammatically correct sentences.
  • Interpret and respond to signs, notices, and spoken commands.
  • Communicate effectively in predictable situations using learned structures.

Competences

Learners will be able to:

  • Engage in simple, direct communication related to familiar and routine matters.
  • Use the language independently to carry out basic tasks in social, public, or workplace contexts.
  • Listen, speak, read, and write at an elementary level with increasing confidence.
  • Manage their own learning and progress towards further language development

Eligibility

  • Those interested in applying must be in possession of a valid Maltese identification document (e.g. Passport) to be able to access the course.
  • Where applicable, proof is to be submitted to [email protected] for verification purposes once application is submitted.

Fees

  • Once application is received, a payment link is sent via email. Payment is to be made within 24 hours of receipt.
  • The fees for the Maltese as a Foreign Language (MQF Level 1) courses are €34.94.
  • Applications close Wednesday 28th of May 2025.
