The Council for the Maltese Living Abroad convened for its 17th annual meeting between the 8th and 9th of October 2025 at the Hilton Hotel in St Julian’s. Comprised of 21 members including representation from Australia, the United States of America, Canada, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, China, Tunisia and the United Kingdom, the Council met in Malta to discuss its work, address issues faced by Maltese communities around the world, to share ideas, and devise a strategic roadmap for the future of the Council.
The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, and the Chairperson of the Council Hon. Ian Borg, who during his speech announced a new Working Holiday for youths of Maltese descent, which will launch in January 2026. Hon. Ian Borg also presented a letter of appreciation to the secretary of the Council, Mr. Joseph Xerri, for his long and outstanding service to this Council.
The meeting included a curtesy visit with H.E. the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, where the work of the council and the challenges faced by the diaspora were discussed. The council also presented a donation to the Community Chest Fund to H.E.
Amongst the main topics of discussion during the meeting were the challenges faced by the diaspora, the promotion of tourism towards Malta, the Maltese identity amongst overseas communities, and the roadmap towards a strategy for the Council.
